At the end of the 15th century, the first ovens appeared which allowed cooking in an enclosed space.
It was not until the 18th century to see the development of real stoves that allowed cooking on a hob.
The cooker pictured here is in the Canons Ashby House (Tudor-era mansion) and has been installed in the original grand fireplace.
